How to Prepare Furniture for Storage

KEEP THIS IN MIND

Unit dimensions, access routes and the way you pack can change what fits. Treat size comparisons as a starting point and ask the facility team when in doubt.

Good preparation prevents most storage damage. Furniture should enter the unit clean, dry, protected and ready to move again without a long restoration job.

Disassemble with care

Remove legs, shelves and detachable hardware where practical. Put screws and fittings in labelled bags and tape those bags to an inconspicuous part of the item. Photograph complicated assemblies before taking them apart.

Protect the right surfaces

Use furniture blankets on timber and finished surfaces, rigid corner protectors on frames and specialist covers for mattresses. Avoid wrapping timber tightly in non-breathable plastic for long periods.

Load for stability

Keep furniture upright when it is designed to stand that way. Do not place heavy boxes on upholstery, glass or delicate tabletops. Leave a small air gap around the walls and a clear route to the door.
